GID Program Info
Global Innovation Design Study Abroad Option

The GID Program resulted from a desire among top-level design academia
in New York, London and Tokyo to come together in a trans-national,
innovation-led, educational experience, and to attract some of the most
promising creative minds from around the world. Pratt Institute in
Brooklyn, New York, Royal College and Imperial College in London, and
Keio Media Design in Tokyo are world-renowned academic institutions,
leaders in design and innovation, aiming to develop skills in applying
creative methods to complex problems in real-world constraints. It is a
partnership between institutions with complementary expertise in art,
design, engineering, technology and business, and with the added
advantage of locations rich in culture, design and lifestyle. Students gain a
unique perspective by living and studying on three different continents,
immersed in three different cultures, amidst three of the largest economies
in the world. The GID program aims to create catalysts for positive change
in a globalized society.

The curriculum at RCA in London focuses on engineering, experience, and
invention. At Keio in Tokyo, students learn about media design and
technology, utilizing the school’s advanced facilities, including prototyping
and robotics. Pratt GID students return to New York to complete their final
two semesters of thesis work and other required courses. The GID
program capitalizes on each school’s expertise and the distinct cultures of
each of the three locations, providing students with rich academic
experiences and a helping them develop a global perspective on design
and entrepreneurship.

THE PROCESS

Pratt M.I.D. students can choose the exciting option to spend their entire
second year abroad for full credit through the Global Innovation Design
program (GID). Pratt students who participate in GID start in the fall
semester of their second year at the Royal College of Art (RCA) and
Imperial College in London and then spend their spring semester at Keio
University in Tokyo. (Students now have the option of choosing to
participate in just one semester of GID; participating in the fall only at RCA
is encouraged due to the on-site collaboration of all three schools.)
Students are expected to indicate their interest in GID at the time of
entering the M.I.D. program. In the first semester of the M.I.D. program,
students acquire more information and get to meet with students who
have returned from GID to determine whether they’re most interested in
spending their second year at Pratt or in opting for GID.

HOUSING

It is highly recommend that you find your own accommodation in the city - giving you complete
flexibility over location, duration and cost. There are many very useful websites such as Airbnb,
Spareroom, EasyRoomate, Rightmove and Gumtree on which you can find individual rooms, or whole
flats you can share with friends.

However, for a hassle free option, Imperial College is able to organise a room on your behalf with our
accommodation partner Britannia Student Services. This would most likely be a Superior Single
En-Suite Room at Tufnell House, and would cost approximately £290 per week (final cost to be
confirmed). If you are interested in this, please note the following key dates above.
