Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship


The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is pleased to launch the January 2023 application cycle. This program enables U.S. undergraduate students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity.

The Gilman Program offers scholarships of up to $5,000 to Pell Grant recipients participating in credit-bearing abroad programs in locations with Level 1 or Level 2 Travel Advisories, according to the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs. Eligible study abroad programs or internships must start between May 1, 2023 and April 30, 2024. Students studying critical need languages may be eligible to receive an additional award of up to $3,000. For more information, please visit the Gilman International Scholarship page.


The John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) provides awards of $5,000 for child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Applicants must be recipients of any type of Title IV federal financial aid.

The application deadline is Thursday, March 9, 2023, by 11:59pm Pacific Time.
